Original Abstract

An investigation based on numerical experiments was carried out to design a very short draft tube (diffuser) for a swirl turbine. Conical insertions of different shapes were placed along the diffuser axis to remove the backflow zone, which is a source of dissipation and unsteadiness. Resulting configuration is simple and achieves very good pressure recovery.
