Original Abstract

New non-linear ultrasonic spectroscopy methods appear to be very promising in the field of non-destructive testing in the building industry. The principle of these methods is based on the fact that the occurrence of mesoscopic elements in the material structure gives rise to strong non-linear dynamic phenomena accompanying the propagation of elastic waves, which are observable during the material degradation process much earlier than any variation of the damage-induced linear parameter variations. These non-linear wave methods thus open new horizons to the acoustic non-destructive testing: they provide high sensitivities, application speed and easy interpretation, which have never been achieved before. Knowledge of fundamental physical quantities (propagation speed, moduli of elasticity etc.) is essential for the initial setting of the instrumentation used in the non-linear ultrasonic spectroscopy. The present paper deals with the effect of the test specimen structure on the elastic wave propagation speed.
