Original Abstract

The Detection Quantum Efficiency (DQE) used to be measured via squared ratio of signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) at input and output of the detector or its part under question. This approach is based on defining SNR as the ratio of rms noise to the actual image signal. In terms of the random variable calculus, it is the ratio of standard deviation s (X) to the mean value E (X) of the pixel signal X taken from scenery with no true image contrast. Assuming X governed by Poisson statistics, we get s (X) = [E(X)]1/2 so that SNR(X) = [E(X)]1/2 as well and the ratio of squared SNRs simply expresses the loss of events in the detection process. This study aims at verifying this simple algorithm for digitized images, and at its application to objective quantification of DQE and contributions to it.
