Original Abstract

In-situ and operando scanning electron microscopy (SEM) enables direct observation of morphological and structural changes in lithium-ion battery components during electrochemical cycling. This paper presents an overview of the instrumental requirements for performing such experiments, including the selection of electron sources, detectors, and auxiliary modules such as heating stages and micromanipulators. Special attention is given to electrochemical control using external potentiostats and the design of sample holders compatible with scanning electron microscopy. Two primary electrochemical cell configurations open and sealed/liquid are compared in terms of resolution, electrolyte compatibility, and ease of assembly. The aim of this work is to summarize the key instrumental considerations for enabling real-time SEM observation of battery degradation phenomena.
