Original Abstract

The development of a new power unit entails many conflicting requirements for low mass, high performance, low energy consumption and low emissions, low price, low vibration and noise, possibility and ease of installation into a vehicle and availability of necessary service operations. Development takes place iteratively at various levels, initially establishing a concept that is then further refined in more detail. The paper describes the conceptual design of the position of the power unit mountings with an internal-combustion engine and an electric generator in a passenger vehicle with a frame structure in the early stage of development. For these purposes, a design model of the entire newly developed power unit at given point in the development stage is created. Inertial characteristics are determined for this model and two alternatives of the power unit mounting position are compared with each other using Multi-Body Dynamics simulations in the time domain with simple computational models of the mountings, in order to highlight only the differences given by their position.
