Original Abstract

This paper deals with the inertia estimation of a complex, interconnected power system. Inertia is related to rotational electric machines, especially synchronous generators. Rotating mass of generator is able to release or absorb kinetic energy, thus have crucial impact in stabilizing the power system in case of large disturbances. Knowing the inertia of the interconnected power system is needed for assessing the power system behaviour. The issue is getting more important with the current increasing penetration of renewable sources, not contributing to the system inertia, which is thus decreasing, and the system requires new means for support. The paper presents the approach for determining the inertia based on the data of installed capacities, done for the future European power system.
