Original Abstract

The operation of contemporary electronic devices under extremely low thermal conditions (below -50°C) presents numerous challenges. The recent chip shortage has significantly constrained the availability of advanced electronic components, reducing the selection to a mere fraction of what was previously accessible. The automotive industry has consumed the majority of the remaining stock, while aerospace-grade components are entirely unavailable. This paper evaluates the application of positive temperature coefficient (PTC) heating strips as a method to maintain underrated electronic devices within a reasonable operational range, thereby minimizing the impact on the electronics design process. Our experimental results indicate that PTC heaters offer substantial advantages over standard heaters used in the aerospace industry, although some challenges remain, which are discussed herein.
