Original Abstract

This paper presents an improved Turowski's method for calculating additional losses caused by eddy currents in foil winding, which is widely used in oil and dry distribution transformers. These losses are typically significant, and their estimation is essential for transformer output parameters and heating during the design process. The original method is the only one known to provide an analytical solution, which is necessary for design optimization. However, as this paper demonstrates, it is quite imprecise. Therefore, the final equation is derived without simplifications again. Then the new utilization combines Turowski's equations with the finite element method to describe the current density in each winding turn from the magnetic field strength obtained at the winding end, making the simulation faster and still accurate in comparison with the original method. The results are compared with the reference values and discussed.
