Original Abstract

The paper begins by discussing some fundamental features of the statistics of extremes important for computational modeling of the statistical size effect, whose asymptotic behavior is not correctly reproduced by the existing stochastic finite element methods. A simple strategy for capturing of statistical size effect using stochastic finite element methods in the sense of extreme value statistics is suggested.
