Original Abstract

Purpose of the article: Several studies suggest that the creative industries often exploit workers and have poorly paid or unpaid work. Therefore, this article aims to examine unpaid labour within the creative industries in the Czech Republic. Subsequently, the aim will be to find out whether there is a relationship between the characteristics of the company and the occurrence of unpaid labour. The chosen characteristics are the company’s age, the number of employees, the gender composition of the work team, the existence of a managerial approach in the company, and the presence of work benefits in the company. Methodology: The article is based on a statistical analysis of primary data collected through a questionnaire distributed to representatives of the publishing industry, which is one of the subsectors of the creative industries. First, descriptive statistics methods will be used to analyse the data. Then bivariate analysis methods in the form of Fisher’s exact test will be applied to analyse the data and their relationships in more detail. Scientific aim: The article aims to determine the incidence of unpaid labour in the creative industries and then determine whether there is a relationship between the selected characteristics of the company and the incidence of unpaid labour in the company. Findings: The results confirm the occurrence of unpaid labour in the creative industries also within the Czech Republic. However, the analysis results did not confirm the existence of a relationship between selected company characteristics and the incidence of unpaid labour in the company. Thus, it can be concluded that within the analysed data sample, there is no relationship between the age of the company, the number of employees, the gender composition of the work team, the existence of managerial approach, the presence of work benefits, and the incidence of unpaid labour. Conclusion: The significant presence of unpaid labour was confirmed within the sample of companies analysed. In addition, a strong presence of employment in the form of temporary jobs, which are generally lower paid, and in the form of agreements, which suggest the existence of a gig economy, was also confirmed through the analysis. However, the results can only be considered valid within the creative industries sub-sector analysed, i.e., the private companies in the publishing industry. Furthermore, additional research is needed to confirm these results in other creative industries subsectors due to their low homogeneity.
