Original Abstract

Lead-acid battery with negative electrodes doped with microscopic glass fibers are comparable with those doped with carbon during accelerated PSoC cycling and reach a long cycle life. The performance of these electrodes can be even elevated by applying moderate compression of 4 N.cm(-2). This work deals with the study of influence of additives added to the negative active mass (NAM) of a lead-acid battery electrode. Specifically, the influence of glass fibers labelled in the work as type "A", "B" and "C" in combination with 0.78 wt.% of carbon was studied. Glass fibers were added in the amount of 0.7; 1.4; 2.8 and 5.6 wt. %. The experiments performed were formation, depth of discharge cycles (DoD) and partial state of charge (PSoC) regime cycles. Pressure on the electrode system (4 N.cm(-2)) was also studied as one variable. Additive combination of glass fibers and carbon in the negative electrode also extends the life of NAM in the PSoC regime. Type of glass fiber does not seem to have such influence on the life expectancy in the PSoC regime. The optimum amount of the glass fiber is 1.4 wt.%.
