Original Abstract

Recent applications of stress ribbon pedestrian bridges built in the USA and UK are described in terms of their architectural and structural solution, the process of construction and the influence of the structural arrangements on the static and dynamic analysis. The bridges havea very slender deck assebmled from precast members formed by two edge girders stiffened by transverse ribs. The main advantage of these structures is that they have a minimal environmental impact because they use very little material and can be erected independently from the existing terrain. Since they do not need bearings or expansion joints they need only minimal long-term maintenance. Recent developments in which the stress ribbon is combined with araches or external cables are also presented.
