Original Abstract

This contribution is focused on numerical elasto-plastic analysis of the stress-strain field at the crack tip in these special specimens made of a pure polycrystalline iron in order to check a validity of the \DeltaK-based description of fatigue crack growth characteristics. Numerically determined values allow us to describe the distribution of plastic deformation \epsilon_p in the whole cross-section. These results reveal that the small scale yielding conditions can be considered to be fulfilled near the threshold. For approximately two times higher \DeltaK values, the \DeltaK_J approach is already more convenient for a characterization of the crack tip stress-strain field. Moreover, the finite element analysis can be used to determine a suitable description for these higher values.
