On the project

Textured piezoceramics with a crystallographically oriented structure exhibit piezoproperties that can compete with those of single crystals. However, for each particular material, it is essential to determine such a crystallographic orientation of the ceramic structure that optimizes the configuration of ferroelectric domains and thus maximizes the piezoelectric response. The proposed project aims to employ a novel, alternative approach to tailoring the crystallographic orientation in ceramics using 3D printing. Digital light processing, coupled with the reactive templated grain growth method, will be utilized to prepare textured Zr-/Ca-doped barium titanate piezoceramics (BZT-BCT) with varying crystallographic orientations. The dependence of the piezoelectric properties on crystallographic orientation and grain size will be investigated, and the optimal orientation for maximum piezoresponse will be identified. The project results will provide a fundamental understanding of the interdependence of phase structure, texture orientation, and piezoelectric properties of BZT-BCT ceramics.
