Hydropower is the oldest and yet the most powerful renewable energy source. However new challenges appear for hydropower on the dramatically evolving energy market: grid stabilization, flexibility, energy accumulation. There are also challenges connected to increasing demand for its sustainability and social acceptance. These new roles have to be reflected in education of future mechanical engineers in the field of hydropower. V. Kaplan Department at Brno University of Technology and Institute for Energy Systems and Thermodynamics, Chair of Fluid-Flow Machinery educate students in the same field: mechanical design of hydraulic machines and hydropower equipment. Different historical experience, background of teachers, different industrial partners and research projects, all this provides a unique opportunity to enrich the educational process of new engineers.
