On the project
Because of decreasing world’s uranium reserves, it is necessary to find the next solution how to generate electrical energy from nuclear fuel. One of the options is to use the nuclear fuel based on thorium. In comparison with uranium, natural reserves of thorium are about 4x more abundant. Thus, thorium can potentially provide electrical energy for several hundreds of years. The next advantage of Th is represented by the less production of high level radioactive waste, including reduced production of plutonium and minor actinides. For this reason, it is particularly important to investigate the new possibilities of the thorium-based systems within the advanced nuclear fuel cycle. At present, scientific institutions in India and China thoroughly investigate thorium fuel cycle. Furthermore, series of experiments with irradiation of thorium in the fast neutron field of the spallation targets have already been performed in the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research Dubna, Russian Federation. This research project struggles to further investigate the problem, obtain and publish new data on reactions in thorium at the spallation targets.
