Werner von Siemens Award seeks talent in technical fields

Are you working on an interesting research project in a technical or natural science field? Apply for the 28th annual Werner von Siemens Award for students, academics, and young researchers. Candidates can submit their applications via the website www.cenasiemens.cz by November 30.

The prestigious Werner von Siemens Awards are presented annually by Siemens Czech Republic in cooperation with leading Czech universities and institutions. “Technological progress is advancing faster than ever before, bringing new challenges and opportunities. To keep pace as a society, we need a strong foundation in education, research, and innovation. That’s why it’s important to highlight outstanding student work in technology and natural sciences – and at the same time recognize the educators who stand behind it. Quality education is the key to our country’s long-term prosperity, and through the Werner von Siemens Award we want to emphasize this value,” said Eduard Palíšek, CEO of the Siemens Group in the Czech Republic, at the launch of this year’s competition.

Master’s, and doctoral theses that excel in quality, contribution to the field, and innovative approach can be submitted. In addition to traditional categories such as Best Master’s or Doctoral Thesis, awards are also given for the Best Result in Basic Research or for Outstanding Quality of a Female Scientific Work.

Announced categories:

  • The most significant result of basic research (individual or research team)
  • Best educator (teacher or lecturer)
  • Best master’s thesis (first three places + thesis supervisors)
  • Best doctoral thesis (first three places + dissertation supervisors)
  • Special award for outstanding quality of a female scientific work
  • Best graduate thesis (master’s/doctoral) focused on Industry 4.0 topics
  • Best graduate thesis (master’s/doctoral) focused on smart infrastructure and energy

This year’s Werner von Siemens Award will distribute a total of one million CZK among the winners. In the categories of Best Master’s and Doctoral Thesis, the awards are given not only to the students but also to their supervisors and advisors. In the previous year, Brno University of Technology ranked as the second most awarded institution. The winners included a lecturer from the Faculty of Information Technology, graduates from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication, and a doctoral student with his supervisor from CEITEC BUT.

The Werner von Siemens Award is, by its scope, prize value, and tradition, one of the most significant independent initiatives of its kind in the Czech Republic. It is organized by Siemens Czech Republic together with representatives of leading universities and the Czech Academy of Sciences, who also participate in the evaluation of the submitted works. Over the past twenty-seven years, 490 students, educators, and researchers have been awarded, with more than CZK 17.4 million distributed in total.
