Brno University of Technology joined the charity event Hospice Cake for the fifth time this year, which took place on Wednesday, October 8. Students and employees of the university sold sweet cakes through four stalls and one mobile unit, raising a total of CZK 118,475 for a good cause! The proceeds will support care for the terminally ill. VUT contributed nearly CZK 120,000 to charity. | Author: Václav Koníček "I am glad that Brno University of Technology has once again joined this charitable initiative, because hospice care is an extremely important area. Our university is a modern institution that not only educates and supports creative development, but also actively responds to current social issues and needs. Supporting the Cake for Hospice collection is one example of how we put this attitude into practice. However, this would not be possible without our students and employees who get involved in these activities and help us, or without the team of organizers and volunteers, whom I would like to thank very much for their help," said BUT Chancellor Kamil Gregorek, who participates in the event every year. The cakes, baked by the university canteens especially for this event, were offered by student and staff volunteers at stalls located by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication, the Faculty of Business and Management, near the terminus of tram no. 12 close to the Faculty of Chemistry, and in Björnson’s Park in front of the Faculty of Civil Engineering. The mobile unit also visited the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, CEITEC BUT, the Faculty of Information Technology, the Faculty of Architecture, and the Rector’s Office during the day. VUT had four stands and one mobile unit. | Author: Václav Koníček The sweet dessert delighted all donors who contributed at least CZK 50. “I am pleased that BUT takes part in charitable activities, as I believe they belong to the life of a university as well. I decided to join this event because it allows me to contribute not only to a good cause but also to raise awareness among our students that charity is an important part of life. We are not just an educational and research institution, but a community of people who care about what happens around us and often have a kind heart. In my opinion, such events also strengthen the sense of togetherness and provide opportunities for meetings beyond work,” said Hana Odstrčilová, who regularly participates as a volunteer at one of the stalls.Hospice Cake is a traditional fundraising event supporting palliative care, organized annually by the Diocesan Charity of Brno, with Brno University of Technology proudly participating for the fifth year in a row. Last year, the charity raised nearly CZK 3.5 million, of which over CZK 105,000 came from the university. This year, the total raised at BUT reached CZK 118,475 – the highest amount since the university began taking part in the collection. All proceeds will go toward supporting home healthcare and equipping the Kamenná Home for Peaceful Old Age and the inpatient hospice in Rajhrad. The proceeds will support palliative care. | Author: Václav Koníček The goal of the autumn fundraising campaign is to raise public awareness about the role of hospices and support charitable care for the dying. Donated contributions are an important source for purchasing new equipment, medicines, and medical supplies. “I’m really glad to be part, even in a small way, of something so meaningful and valuable, and I have deep respect for all those who are ready to help and care for those in need – both professionally and personally,” said another volunteer from BUT, Alžběta Rašková. We sincerely thank everyone who bought a sweet cake and contributed to a good cause!
