Summer School of Biomedicine: High school students experience science first-hand

In June, the Summer School of Biomedicine took place at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication, Brno University of Technology. The event, which attracted enthusiastic high school students, offered a unique opportunity to dive into the world of modern science, technology, and medicine – all in a playful, practical, and accessible way.

The summer school program was packed with laboratory workshops where participants could experience firsthand what the work of a biomedical engineer entails. The students engaged in electronics, measured their own biosignals, programmed an eye segmentation tool, discovered how genetically different their DNA is from dinosaurs, and explored imaging methods. Modern technologies were also represented through 3D printing and even bioprinting. Participants also processed tomographic volume data of the heart and got familiar with bioprinting techniques using a pneumatic extruder.

The summer school took place in an inspiring and friendly atmosphere. Students got to work in top-class laboratories, peek behind the scenes of biomedical research, and many of them left determined to connect their future careers with science and research. “The Summer School of Biomedicine is organized with the goal of showing prospective students of FEEC BUT that there is immense potential at the intersection of medicine and technology,” said Oto Janoušek, the event organizer.

Thanks to the great interest and positive feedback, the Institute of Biomedical Engineering plans to continue the summer school next year as well.
