BUT Students Dominated the Students' Games 2025

The delegation of athletes from Brno University of Technology (BUT) travelled to Lausanne, Switzerland, from 10 to 14 April 2025 to compete with other university teams at the Students' Games 2025. BUT was the first university from the Czech Republic to participate in this sporting event in its seven-year history. And they did so in great style. In the overall university ranking, BUT took 1st place and won the trophy for the most successful participant of the games. The event brought together around 1,000 participants from 23 universities from Switzerland, France and Germany.

BUT was represented by 35 male students, 25 female students, and the group was joined by 2 teachers. The event was organized in a “students for students” format, meaning it was entirely run by the Department of Sports of the host university UNIL (Université de Lausanne), without the active involvement of academic staff. Most of the 12 sports took place at the university's sports venues and the entire tournament emphasized sustainability. Waste sorting, food and drinks in recycled packaging, participant shirts made from recycled materials, and more were a matter of course. The campus holds the “FISU Healthy Campus” certification.

The tournament included the following disciplines:

  • Athletics (running)
  • Badminton
  • Basketball 3x3
  • Orienteering
  • Swimming
  • Bouldering
  • Football
  • Petanque
  • Table tennis
  • Volleyball
  • Beach volleyball
  • Ultimate frisbee

BUT competed in the following disciplines with these results:

  • Men’s volleyball – 1st place
  • Women’s volleyball – 1st place
  • Mixed frisbee – 1st place
  • Table tennis – 1st place – BUT Team 2
  • Basketball 3x3 men – 1st place – BUT Team 2
  • Table tennis – 2nd place – BUT Team 1
  • Basketball 3x3 men – 2nd place – BUT Team 1
  • Basketball 3x3 women – 2nd place – BUT Team 1
  • Table tennis – 3rd place – BUT Team 3
  • Basketball 3x3 men – 4th place – BUT Team 3
  • Basketball 3x3 women – 5th place – BUT Team 2

The student representation of the university was exemplary. The group brought home not only sports trophies and memories but also ideas for student-led events inspired by sustainability, fair play, and internationalization. There is also potential for collaboration with the Master of Science in Human Movement and Sports Sciences programme focusing on Sport Management and Technology, as part of the Sports Technologies study programme.

As part of their free time, the group visited the Olympic Museum. In the spirit of sport, they also met with Marek Pakosta, who is the chairman of the Czech Volleyball Federation, vice-chairman of the Czech Union of Sport, member of the Executive Committee of the Czech Olympic Committee, board member of CEV and FIVB, participant of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, European champion in 1996, winner of the CEV Volleyball Champions League, double winner of the CEV Cup Winners’ Cup, and a member of the Czech Volleyball Federation Hall of Fame.

BUT’s success at the Students' Games 2025 in Lausanne is not only a testament to the athletic talent and team spirit of its students but also an inspiration for others. The results, dedication, and representation demonstrated that a technical university can also excel in sport on the international stage. We thank all members of the delegation for their excellent representation of the university, their sportsmanship, and for promoting the good name of BUT abroad. We look forward to future successes!
