Brno University of Technology (BUT) and the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS) have signed a new framework agreement on cooperation in the implementation of doctoral study programmes. The aim, following legislative changes resulting from the amendment to the Higher Education Act, is to adjust the conditions for cooperation in doctoral studies and to strengthen the quality and relevance of research and development in educating a new generation of scientists and researchers.BUT and the Czech Academy of Sciences have signed a framework agreement on doctoral studies. The new legal framework for this cooperation is based on the amendment to the Higher Education Act, which changes the conditions of doctoral studies, particularly their funding. The agreement defines the terms of cooperation and the involvement of CAS institutes in the education of doctoral students at BUT. “We have similar agreements with our industrial partners and sectoral research institutes that participate in doctoral education as part of the so-called industrial PhD programmes,” said Ladislav Janíček, Rector of BUT.
“We consider it essential that students interested in science become familiar with the environment of top-level research already during their studies. We regard BUT as an important partner both in scientific cooperation and in the training of doctoral students and young researchers. Therefore, I am pleased that we can further develop this area, which will be supported by the formal step of signing the new agreement,” said the President of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Radomír Pánek.By signing the agreement, BUT and the Czech Academy of Sciences declare their shared commitment to enhancing the quality and efficiency of research, promoting knowledge transfer, and cooperating in the education of doctoral students. | Author: Václav KoníčekThe main objective of the framework agreement is to define the conditions and establish the legal basis for the implementation of doctoral programmes. The cooperation involves six faculties and units of BUT: the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication, the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the Faculty of Chemistry, the Faculty of Information Technology, and the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC BUT). On the CAS side, the Institute of Scientific Instruments, the Institute of Physics of Materials, and the Institute of Analytical Chemistry are participating.
The key aspects of cooperation include creating stable conditions for doctoral students and their research. Through cooperation with CAS, doctoral students will gain access to additional knowledge resources and research infrastructure essential for their studies and research — from instrumentation and technical equipment to laboratories, libraries, and the expertise concentrated in individual research departments. The cooperation also supports publication activities and addresses the protection and management of intellectual property rights. Supervisors traditionally come from both institutions. Another important topic of cooperation is the support and development of research infrastructure, without which it would not be possible to sustain long-term scientific excellence. The cooperation between BUT and the Czech Academy of Sciences is a long-standing tradition that takes place on many levels, including the institutional one. | Author: Václav Koníček
Specific forms of cooperation will be further defined in individual tripartite agreements between BUT, the relevant CAS institute, and the student. The agreement is concluded for an indefinite period and replaces the previous cooperation agreement signed in 2018.
“The cooperation between BUT and CAS is a long-standing tradition that takes place at many levels, including the institutional one. We are partners in projects and participate in each other’s scientific councils. We collaborate in a number of strategic areas — for instance in semiconductors, nanotechnologies, electron microscopy, advanced materials research, as well as in space and environmental technologies. The new agreement therefore represents an umbrella framework that covers the full scope of cooperation and formalizes the existing links. Such collaboration strengthens both institutions in developing competitiveness and the reputation of research in the international context. I am convinced that only through mutual symbiosis can we achieve true excellence,” said Rector of BUT, Ladislav Janíček.Among the key points of the cooperation is, above all, the creation of stable conditions for doctoral students and their research. | Author: Václav Koníček
