Properties and Production of Electrotechnic Materials

The subject is lectured in English language and is determined for those who want to improve their knowledge of technical English with orientation to structure, composition and properties of basic categories of electrotechnical materials and methods of their production.

Entry knowledge

Knowledge of electrical materials on the level of the bachelor's course Materials and technical documentation.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

up to 40 points from written test of specialized English terminology during the semester
up to 60 points from written test focused on verification of knowledge and orientation in presented topics
The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.

Aims

The aim of the subject is a professional language preparation of students for a study in English or jobs demanded knowledge of English terminology in electrotechnics with orientation to electrotechnic materials and their production. The subject is set for the students having basic knowledge of English grammar and spoken English.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- classify electrical materials from the point of view of their properties and usage,
- explain nature of physical phenomena that take place in the structure of electrical materials,
- be knowledgeable in English terminology in the field of electrotechnical materials, their structure, composition, properties and selected production processes,
- be knowledgeable in English written technical texts with mentioned themes,
- use specialized English terminology both in written text and in speech.

Syllabus

Structure, composition and properties of electrotechnic materials.
Metals, electrical and thermal conductivity of metals. Materials for conductors and resistors, manufacturing of windings, thermocouples.
Superconductivity, superconductors of the 1st and 2nd class, high temperature superconductors.
Magnetic materials, theory of the ferromagnetic state, losses in magnetic materials.
Soft and hard magnetic materials, metallic magnetic materials, ferrites.
Semiconductors, concentration of carriers, conductivity of semiconductors.
Non equilibrium states in semiconductors.
Generation - recombination process.
Properties of basic semiconductor structures, PN junction, metal-insulator-semiconductor, metal-semiconductor.
Production of semiconductor materials and structures.
Insulators and dielectrics, polarization mechanisms, dielectrics in dc and ac electric fields.
Conductivity and losses in insulators, electrical and thermal breakdown of insulators.
Survey of insulators in solid, liquid and gaseous state. Manufacturing of ceramics, glasses and plastics.
