Electrotechnical Materials and Production Processes I

Materials for electrotechnology - composition, structure, manufacturing and application. Dielectric materials - polarization, loss and breakdown. Plastics, glass, ceramic and glass ceramic - types, properties, processing technology. Composites materials. Metals and resistive materials - classification, properties and manufacturing.
Semiconductors materials - classification, properties, physics and behaviour at equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions. Manufacturing of semiconductors materials and basic semiconductor structures. Technological steps for manufacturing of integrated components.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Attendance of the laboratory practice is obligatory. Students can obtain up to 30 points for completion of five laboratory hands-on tasks. The final exam takes place during the standard examination period and the students can earn up to 70 points. The exam is written.
Attendance of the laboratory practice is obligatory.


The aim of the course is to acquaint the students with the fundamental functional materials that are used in manufacturing of electric and electronic devices.
The student after completion of the course:
- Can explain the basic phenomena and understand the physical fundamentals in relation to the area of dielectric, conductive, resistive, magnetic and semiconductor materials.
- Can choose an appropriate material for a specific application
- Is familiar with classification, internal structure, composition and properties of semiconductor materials
- Is able to measure basic material properties and operate appropriate measurement devices
- Can describe manufacturing processes of dielectric materials, plastics, metals, semiconductors and can describe the process steps of basic semiconductor structures
