Course curriculum

1. Switches and crossing, types, turnout parts.
2. Geometry of set of switches and common crossings. Manufactured types and notation.
3. The single turnout, stock rail, switch rail (blade), common and crossings, sleepers, fastenings systems.
4. Operating and locking systems. Crossings and slip points.
5. Turnout collections. Cross overs, junctions.
6. Sets of turnouts. Turnouts in curves. High speed turnouts, development of new turnouts structures.
7. Track loads, vertical, lateral and longitudinal forces, influence of higher operation speed
8. Static track design, rail stresses, sleeper stresses, vertical stresses on ballast bed and formation, computer models
9. Dynamic analysis of railway structures.
10. Rail failures, rail grinding.
11. Slab track, slab sleepers and sleeper slabs, concrete slabs.
12. Concrete sleepers, design and estimation. Concrete elements in railway substructure.
13. Cable railway, funiculars. Crane tracks.

Aims

The objective of the subject is to introduce students to the problems of switches and crossings, turnouts, static and dynamic design of railway track and its structure elements and to practise acquires knowledge and skills.
