Advanced microscopic techniques in biology

Introduction to microscopy techniques and their use in biology. Fluorescence microscopy, dyes, their characterization and use. Histochemical, immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence. Microscopic methods for detection of cell organelles ( nucleus, nucleolus, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, mitochondria, cytoskeleton, lysosomes, vacuoles and other membrane structures). Microscopic detection cell function and apoptosis (programmed cell death). Detection ions, reactive oxygen and nitrogen. Nanoparticles and their use in microscopic techniques.

Course curriculum

1. Introduction to microscopic techniques. Light, fluorescence, confocal and electron microscopy.
2. Methods for the preparation of biological materials for various microscopic techniques and their specifics.
3. Fluorescence dyes used in microscopic techniques. Fluorescent dyes. Characterization, classification.
4. Histochemical, immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence techniques. Principles and applications.
5. Cell organelles, their structure and function I - using microscopic techniques.
6. Cell organelles, their structure and function II - using microscopic techniques.
7. Cell cycle and apoptosis. Microscopic detection of apoptosis (programmed cell death) as a complex process.
8. Microscopic detection of bioactive molecules (amines, thiols, carboxylic acids, proteins, etc.).
9. Microscopic detection of reactive oxygen and nitrogen.
10. Microscopic ion detection.
11. In situ hybridization.
12. Nanoparticles and their use in microscopic techniques
