Mobile Network Communication Systems

Protocol architecture of mobile networks, transport and switching systems for mobile networks, differences from fixed telecommunication systems, control protocols and signalling in mobile networks, maintenance over mobile networks. GSM networks, architecture, connection control, communication protocols between GSM exchange registers, Data transmission in mobile networks, new technologies - HSCSD and GPRS. Transmisssion capacity increasing by implementation of EDGE system. Cooperation among mobile network and the other ones. Mobile networks and the Internet. Third generation mobile networks - IMT-2000/UMTS.

3. Service technical solution - speech services, voice encoding - FR, HR, EFR
4. Data transmission - transparent, nontransparent, facsimile message transmission
5. Structure of mobile networks - basic components, their functions,
6. GSM system - evolution, phases 1, 2, 2+, structure, interfaces
7. Base station subsystem - BTS, BSC, communication channels - frequency band division methods, channel types and their functions
8. Network subsystem - MSC, GMSC, registers - HLR, VLR, EIR
9. GSM modems - kinds, AT commands for mobile data communication
10. SMS system - message transmission. Signalling - signalling system, mobile station authentication, information transmission about location of mobile station position
11. Operational subsystem - operating and service centre, network management centre, administration center, intelligent service centre
12. Methods for data transmission rate enhancement - EDGE, HSCSD, GPRS - transmission techniques, comparison with standard GSM system
13. Mobile communication system integration and system for network transmission capacity enhancement for multimedia services - UMTS/IMT-2000, LTE

• GSM mobile network: GSM network architecture, basic specifications. GSM BSS – spectrum allocation, functions of base transceiver station and base station controller; NSS subsystem - MSC, GMSC, registers - HLR, VLR, EIR. GSM radio environment – frequency bands, physical and logical channels, timing advance; error protection, interleaving, power control, cell reselection. GSM procedures – network attach, handover, service establishment and release;
• GPRS service: GPRS network architecture; tasks of SGSN and GGSN nodes; Radio environment, radio resource sharing with GSM; Physical and logical channels, coding schemes, temporary block flow; user and control plane protocols, APN, PDP context, traffic flow template, mobility and session management procedures,
• EDGE technology: 8-PSK, modulation and coding schemes, required changes in networks, link adaptation, incremental redundancy,
• 3G - Third generation mobile networks: IMT2000, technologies UMTS, CDMA2000, spectrum allocation. UMTS – network architecture, duplex techniques FDD, TDD; UTRAN – UMTS radio access network, Node B, RNC; UMTS – handover (soft, hard, inter-system); UMTS radio environment – physical layer, WCDMA principle, rake receiver, scrambling, power control. Handover in UMTS – hard, soft, softer. Service architecture in UMTS. Channel architecture in UTRAN - physical, transport and logical channels; framing. UMTS core network – circuit switched and packet switched domains, UMTS – QoS support, UMTS protocol planes and interface protocol sets; procedures in UMTS. HSPA and HSPA+ technologies.
• 4G - Fourth generation mobile networks: EPS network architecture, LTE, EPC, basic specifications. eUTRAN - LTE – frequency bands, functions of eNodeB; LTE radio environment – OFDMA and SC-FDMA, MIMO, channel bandwidths, adaptive modulation and coding schemes, physical, transport and logical channels, timing advance, error protection. EPS core network - MME, HSS, PCRF, S-GW a P-GW nodes and their tasks, interfaces, user and control plane protocol architectures. Signalling – message sequences for implementation of control procedures and data services. LTE Advanced technology.
