Social-Psychological Competencies of a Manager

The course focuses on the basic theoretical knowledge from social-psychology, especially those that are applicable in managerial work. The course offers also a space for a personal experience, the development of self cognition, and a training of basic social, psychological, and communicative skills usable in practice.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
1) Active participation in exercises (max. 2 absences)
2) Seminar work
- title page + 5 - 10 pages of text.
- theoretical basis (1/3 of work), article processing (2/3 work).
- processing an article from a professional database of electronic resources (https://www.vutbr.cz/knihovny/eiz). You can combine multiple sources together.
- Article must be a scientific study (including research) published in an impacted journal in English.
- the seminar paper is not translated by a copy of the article!
- formal requirements must be in accordance with Dean's Directive No. 2/2013.
- at the end of the work, you must provide a list of used resources from which you draw (see citacepro.com / http://citace.lib.vutbr.cz/slozka) according to ISO 690. Seminar work must be given to the trainee for a maximum of 2 days (48 working hours) before the exercise where they present through e-learning.
3) Presentation on the theme chosen for the exercise in the given PPT term for 8-10 minutes, the structure of the presentation will be as follows:
- Imagine yourself and your topic
- In the beginning, you will say what you are going to talk about
- you present the theoretical starting point of your topic
- Present an article analysis
- First, the name of the article, the names of the authors, the year and place of release, the name of the database you have drawn from, the magazine and the IF
- you will continue to focus on the methodology of research, the number of respondents, the research method and the results of the research
- summarize your presentation briefly summarizing what you were talking about and mentioning your own opinion
Attendance at the lecture is not obligatory. The course is finished by a written exam in which the student has to prove his / her knowledge with a minimum of 60% success. Participation in the exam is mandatory.
Course curriculum
2. Personality of the manager. Skill, knowledge, skills, experiences, motives and needs. Attitudes, values, specific dimensions of personality. Competencies of the manager. Interpersonal, information, decision-making, organizational, motivational.
3. Interpersonal competencies. Leadership styles, teamwork, communicatin techniques, dealing with conflicts, neagotiation.
4. Informative compatencies. Commucation styles, verbal communication, non-verbal communication, efficient communication, feed back, leading the meetings, presentation skills.
5. Decision-making competencies. Analytical techniques, creative techniques, brainstorming, Think Tank, types of managerial decisions, process of decision-making, styles of decision-making, solving problems.
6. Organizational and motivational competencies. Organozational goals, SMART, planning, principles of effective planning, monitoring, change management, hierarchy of needs, motivation, evaluation of performance, performance appraisal, delegating, coaching, mentoring.
The content of seminars is practicing the lectured topics and work out given tasks. Students will analyze and discuss case studies of selected firms that are related to lectured topics:
1. Enterprise as a social system.
2. Personality of manager.
3. Interpersonal competence of manager.
4. Information competencies of manager.
5. Decision-making competence of manager.
6. Organizational and motivational role of manager.
