Bioethics

Biomedical Ethics deals with the overlap of biomedical and ethics, particularly the ethical implications of biotechnology. The course extends technological and biotechnological approach for humanitarian dimension. A prerequisite treatise on moral dilemmas arising from the development and application of biomedical technologies is transdisciplinarity.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will acquire basic knowledge of bioethics. In addition, they will develop the ability to identify ethically relevant aspects of working with laboratory animals and learn how to apply appropriate bioethical standards according to Decree No. 419/2012 Coll. and EU Directive 2010/63.

Prerequisites

The subject knowledge on the Bachelor´s degree level is requested.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

To successfully completion of the course it is necessary to pass the final test, which focuses on legislative issues of bioethics.

Course curriculum

Lectures given to the ethical issues of biomedical and experimental practices. In each lecture the ethical issues is discussed, including follow-up discussion.

2. Decree No. 419/2012 Coll., The protection of animals
3. Directive of the European Parliament 2010/63/EHS
4. Zoohygiene of experimental animals
5. Welfare primates and wild animal
6. Surgery in rats (video)
7. Seminar and test

Aims

The aim is to discuss the ethical aspects of biomedical research using laboratory animals and to provide general basics of biomedical ethics, including bioethics standards and legal requirements.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The course consists of optional lectures and excursions. Compulsory attendance is at the final seminar and test.
