Original Abstract

The paper is focused on the influence of surface micro-cavities in non-conformal contact on tribological quantities, such as lubricant film thickness, contact pressure and especially rolling contact fatigue (RCF). Both the possible negative and positive effects of surface texturing under mixed lubrication conditions are considered. The lubricant film thickness was measured using experimental apparatus based on thin film colorimetric interferometry, where the contact is realized between steel ball and glass disc. The test rig consisting of two discs loaded and running against roller specimen was used for measurement of RCF. Obtained results confirmed the key effect of micro-features depth on film thickness and RCF behaviour under rolling/sliding conditions.
