Original Abstract

The use of pozzolanic admixtures in cement production is a possible way to reduce emissions, especially CO2. A good example is the technogenic pozzolan metakaolin. The disadvantage is its high price and resource constraints. One alternative may be another type of phyllosilicate, which is shale. Shales are relatively available, but they have undergone metamorphosis and their calcinability may be limited. Calcinability will depend strongly on the mineralogical composition. The work is focused on the influence of mineralogical composition on the calcinability of shales. Suitable type of sedimentary shale was selected. Petrographic analysis and chemical analysis were carried out. Mineralogical composition of shale sample was performed by XRD analysis using glycolation for accurate identification of clay minerals. In the second part, calcinability of shale under different burning temperatures was studied. The pozzolanic activity was evaluated by Chapelle test. In the third part, blended cement mortars were made and the efficiency indices for replacing of 30 % Portland cement were determined. As a result, the effective calcination temperature, and the relationship of the mineralogical composition with the increase of pozzolanic activity were evaluated.
