Original Abstract

Rail is considered one of the most environmentally friendly conventional modes of transport. However, it also has its shortcomings. One of the most serious is the squealing noise that is produced when a vehicle passes through a curve in the track. It is necessary to investigate this phenomenon and find measures to counteract it. Research can be carried out on a real track with real vehicles and using on-board diagnostic equipment, which has the advantage of obtaining real data. The disadvantage of this approach is the time consuming nature and poor repeatability of testing. These drawbacks are eliminated by the twin-disc test rigs. The basic design element of these devices is a wheel or disc that rolls along a rail or disc that simulates it. A twin-disc device with a real wheel was designed and built at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Design with emphasis on realistic values of stiffness of wheel mounting. In this way it is possible to simulate contact conditions to approximate the contact conditions on a real track.
