Original Abstract

Non-linear finite element analysis (NLFEA) represents a powerful tool for researchers and engineers. Validated NLFEA provides an advanced approach that should be combined with adequate considerations of variability of material and geometrical parameters to provide a realistic description of complex structural systems. As coupling NLFEA with a fully probabilistic reliability analysis is often highly time-consuming, the engineering practice prefers using simplified semi-probabilistic methods. The key aspect in semi-probabilistic approaches is an estimation of coefficient of variation (ECoV) of structural resistance. In recent years, ECoV methods have been considerably developed, accompanied by some industrial applications. This contribution provides a critical comparison of well-known ECoV methods with the recently proposed modification using the Taylor Series Expansion and its adaptation referred to as Eigen ECoV. Selected fundamental situations, representative for systems including concrete columns, are analysed considering also the standard partial factor method (PFM). The obtained results suggest that the PFM, ECoV and its recent improvement Eigen ECoV may provide slightly conservative or unsafe estimates in the cases with multiple failure modes; the associated errors up to 10% are deemed to be of moderate importance for practice. These errors can be reduced by using the TSE or Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS). The observed errors are attributed to the failure in identifying the type of the distribution of system resistance and to the errors in estimating the mean value and coefficient of variation of the system resistance. The errors of all methods may increase when a strongly non-lognormal distribution of the system resistance and/ or statistical correlation amongst important basic variables are inadequately considered
