Original Abstract

In the year 1900 there were just sixteen cities with population over one million, now there are more than four hundred cities over this population in the world. In the last one hundred years the big cities have grown rapidly. We are living in the epoch of big and fast changes. Modern cities are under the pressure of big social and building development. They are as well under the huge pressure of globalization. Our cities have been influenced by 20s European modernist utopias. "Ville Radieuse" and other modernist visions are almost one hundred years old. Now modernist urban planning and its problems are more current in China. There are big contrasts in traditional and modernist spirit of Chinese cities.
