Original Abstract

The paper is focused on the possibilities of the usage of fibre-reinforced polymers or polymer composites respectively, to strength timber structural members of load-bearing civil engineering structures, in the case of reconstructions, for example. Strengthening timber beams using external reinforcement based on carbon-fibre-reinforced or glass-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP or GFRP) composites appears the advanced way. The paper deals with the problems of the application of externally bonded lamellas based on CFRP and GFRP composites for strengthening timber beams to increase their load-carrying capacity and stiffness, in the case of reconstructions of existing building constructions (e.g. historical buildings), for example. During the process of the beam resistance investigation the attention is mainly paid to increasing load-bearing capacity in connection with increasing stiffness of the beams strengthened by lamellas mentioned. In the paper, mainly the information obtained from the experimental research is presented, that means especially outcomes of the experimental verification of the actual behaviour, failure mechanism and load-bearing capacity of the beams strengthened. For this reason, loading tests of two sets of timber beams strengthened by CFRP lamellas have been performed and subsequently test results have been elaborated and statistically evaluated. For the solution of this problem the theoretical analyses using analytical and numerical tools and experimental verification using loading and material tests including advanced methods of the test results evaluation are used. The research has been oriented to several particular problems and in connection with this, to the following arising results: (i) results of the parametric and comparative studies to choose the available beam cross-sections for experimental investigations, (ii) results of the loading and material tests to obtain actual objective resistances and material properties for subsequent numerical analysis, (iii) the efficiency of the application of CFRP and GFRP for strengthening timber beams including their comparison.
