CRP 18+ 2022 Social Safety at Czech Universities in the Context of Academic Ethics

  • To support the provision of social safety at the university, the BUT joined the central development project CRP 18+ "Social Safety at Czech Universities in the Context of Academic Ethics" in 2022. This is a national project involving a total of 26 Czech universities.
  • The focus of the project is clearly described in its annotation: '...the project focuses on strengthening institutional mechanisms to promote a safe environment for study, teaching, research and other activities in public universities. It sees "social safety" as an overarching concept, the essence of which is the active building of a positive social climate of institutions, in which the values of collegiality, openness, respect and consideration for all members of the academic community (students, academics, other staff and visitors) are valued and manifestations of undesirable behaviour such as sexual harassment, discrimination, intimidation, aggression, bullying, etc. are rejected."
  • The concept of social safety originated in the Netherlands. All Dutch universities have a social safety statement. Together with the Association of Universities, they speak out against undesirable behaviour and share the responsibility for a socially safe university. Czech universities have decided to adopt this concept as their own and thus help to set up solutions to this long-discussed issue in the environment of Czech universities.

Addressing the issue at the BUT

BUT has set the following goals for 2022 in the area of ensuring social safety at the university:

  1. Awareness of social safety and undesirable behaviour.
  2. Analysis of the current state of addressing the issue at faculties and units
  3. Handbook for staff and students
  4. Proposed recommendations for ensuring social safety at the university
