Vast deployment of fiber to the home (FTTH) is underway to accommodate the explosion in bandwidth demand driven by the extreme growth in Internet services. FTTH is typically realized by gigabit-class passive optical network (PON) systems, such as gigabit Ethernet PON (EPON) standardized by IEEE and gigabit-capable PON (GPON) standardized by ITU-T. Students of technical universities have to be familiar with the new technologies. In this paper we simulated different standards of passive optical networks, splitting ratios, emitted power levels, received sensitivities and different bit rates. Results of bit error rates (BER) helped us to choose suitable technology for our laboratory network
