This article describes a heat pump model that was created for teaching master’s students in the field of applied physics (or building physics). The model contains all the essential components used in real commercial heat pumps. Students use this model to learn about the functions of a heat pump, master the principle of transferring heat from a lower temperature to a higher one, and discover why this process does not contradict the second law of thermodynamics. They measure the coefficient of performance (COP) and plot graphs showing the dependence of COP values on time and temperature. The article describes the tasks assigned to students and clearly presents the entire measurement process, including evaluation and discussion of the results. It also includes teaching experiences gathered during several years of operation of previous heat pumps used in teaching. The introduction to this article briefly describes the classification of heat pumps and mentions their properties.
