Organic Mixed Ionic-Electronic Conductors (OMIECs) are emerging as key materials for bioelectronics and energy storage due to their ability to support fast and reversible ion exchange. In this work, we present a novel approach for real-time detection of ion exchange processes between OMIECs and their surrounding electrolyte. The method integrates the electrical response of organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) with optical readout using ion-selective fluorescent probes dispersed in the electrolyte. By simultaneously monitoring the current response of the OECT to gate voltage modulation and changes in the probe fluorescence intensity, we gain a comprehensive view of the ion dynamics at the OMIEC interface. This combined detection strategy allows quantification of the number of exchanged ions. Our results demonstrate the potential of this hybrid ion exchange sensing for a better understanding of the ion transport mechanisms in OMIECs and for the development of high-performance organic electronic devices.
