How do you get to BUT? A commuting survey seeks the answer

Earth Day, celebrated annually on 22 April, is traditionally associated with environmental protection. This year, Brno University of Technology is using the occasion to take a closer look at one important topic – the everyday commuting of thousands of people to their faculties and workplaces.

Transport and commuting are among the operational topics systematically monitored at BUT, alongside energy, water, and waste management. Since 2023, the university has been measuring its carbon footprint, including employees’ business travel. However, the daily journeys of students and staff to study and work have so far been missing from the data – and that is now changing.

The BUT Sustainability Office, together with the BUT Strategy Office, has therefore prepared a commuting survey running from 22 to 29 April 2026.

“The aim is to regularly assess the modal split – in other words, what proportion of people travel by car, public transport, bicycle, or on foot. This data serves as a baseline and comparative indicator for strategic decision-making at both faculty and university level,” explains Kateřina Myslivcová, Sustainability Process Coordinator at BUT.

BUT is also a technical university where faculties focus on transport engineering, electromobility, and intelligent transport systems. Commuting to faculties and workplaces is therefore a topic the university understands not only operationally, but also professionally and academically. The transport infrastructure across its campuses – parking areas, bicycle stands, charging stations – is mapped within the university’s own geographic information system.

The questionnaire is available in two versions – one for students and one for employees. It asks about commuting methods, the main mode of transport, travel time, and satisfaction with on-site conditions, whether related to cycling infrastructure, public transport frequency, or parking availability. It is anonymous and takes only 3–4 minutes to complete. The survey has been designed so that it can be repeated regularly and track developments over time.

The results will be published on the BUT Sustainability Office website in May 2026.
