BUT among the leaders in international education, FA receives DZS award

Brno University of Technology (BUT) has achieved a significant success in the Czech National Agency for International Education and Research (DZS) Awards. Three projects were shortlisted this year, and the Faculty of Architecture additionally received the main award in the internationalisation category. BUT projects succeeded across key areas such as digitalisation, sustainability, and international cooperation, competing against more than 300 submissions from across the Czech Republic.

The awards are presented by the Czech National Agency for International Education and Research to projects and individuals that contribute to the development of international education. The awards highlight inspiring initiatives, promote the sharing of good practice, and motivate other organisations to engage in international cooperation. This year’s edition confirmed that international education has an impact far beyond the projects themselves – strengthening tolerance, mutual understanding, and the ability to respond to new challenges.

A total of 36 projects and 12 individuals were nominated for the final round, with the winners selected by a jury of 16 experts. The awards are granted to projects that stand out for their quality, originality, and tangible impact on participants and the wider community.

In the digitalisation category, the project Digital Analytics and Artificial Intelligence in Digital Marketing (FP) was successful. The sustainability category was represented by the project Seminare und Exkursionen aus dem Bereich des Eisenbahnwesens in Österreich und der Tschechischen Republik (FAST).

BUT achieved its greatest success in the internationalisation category, where the Faculty of Architecture received the main award for the project Urban Hybrid Graz/Brno – Joint Studios in Architectural Education 2024 (FA). The winning project stood out for its emphasis on international collaboration in teaching and its innovative approach to architectural education. The principal investigator was Radek Toman, Vice-Dean of the BUT Faculty of Architecture. The cooperation between Technische Universität Graz and Brno University of Technology developed joint teaching in architecture. Students from both institutions worked on shared assignments within so-called joint studios. Two exhibitions of student work were also held in Brno and Graz, presenting the outcomes of the joint teaching and collaboration between the two universities.

“I'm thrilled about the award. First and foremost, I would like to thank Eva Truncová, a PhD student at the Faculty of Architecture, who collaborated with me on the project, as well as the students involved. The work on the project was characterised by the creative energy and enthusiasm of the entire team,” said Radek Toman, Vice-Dean of the BUT Faculty of Architecture.
“I see BUT’s success in this year’s DZS Awards as confirmation of a systematic approach to internationalisation that connects education, research, and cooperation with international partners. The awarded project also demonstrates how we respond to current challenges – not only through the active involvement of students and close collaboration with partners, but also through the targeted preparation of students for a global environment and the development of their professional and intercultural competences. My thanks go to all colleagues, students, and partners involved in its implementation, as well as to the teams of the other nominated projects,” emphasised Vice-Rector for Internationalisation and Human Resources Iveta Šimberová.

The success of three projects confirms BUT’s strong position in international education and its ability to respond to current challenges and trends such as digitalisation, sustainability, and the deepening of international cooperation.
