Original Abstract

This work deals with growth of cerium-based conversion coatings on aluminium alloy AW 2024-T351. This paper is focused on influence of varying conditions (activation agens, temperature and immersion time) on final properties of obtained coating. The microstructure and chemical composition of the protective films have been examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The level of corrosion protection was evaluated by the polarization resistance measurement in neutral 3.5 wt.% sodium chloride solution. The coating obtained by simply immersion in solution of Ce3+ salt covers surface of alloy with thin protective layer. The coating obtained from solution containing addition of hydrogen peroxide was thicker and it was formed by small (submicomteric) spherical particles. With increasing immersion time protective effect of obtained layer was increased. In oposite of published papers, coating obtained in bath containing hydrogen peroxide provided worse protection against corrosion.
