Original Abstract

A range of methods is utilized for the treatment of gas or liquid organic compounds. The thermal treatment of wastes can be considered as one of the most frequently used and most efficient processes. This method is based on a high temperature oxidizing organic compounds by oxygen from air when inert (i.e. not harmful) gases like CO2 and H2O are generated. A quite new unique equipment for the thermal treatment of CO and organic compounds has been developed. Placing a cylindrical combustion chamber inside a heat exchanger - polluted air pre-heater - can be considered as a main characteristic feature. The integration of combustion chamber and air pre-heater (a counter-current heat exchanger with a helical flow of both fluids) into one highly compact equipment has several advantages. This incineration unit has relatively small dimensions owing to its compactness, fuel (natural gas) flowrate is minimized as well as heat losses to the ambient air. In some cases an auto-thermal process can occur depending on type and concentration of pollutants. Then the burner (which is placed at the top of combustion chamber) takes only a stabilizing function. It can be said that both investment and operating costs are minimized and this unit for the thermal treatment of volatile organic compounds can easily be placed within industrial units and/or processes. A relatively simple mathematical model for rapid calculations for both designers and operators has been developed. This model consists of submodels of combustion chamber and heat exchanger. Based on this model a computer program has been created. This program comprises a user friendly interface which enables input of whichever parameters including dimensions of the equipment, flowrate of polluted gas and concentrations of pollutants. Results can be displayed both in numerical and graphical form with a possibility of export in free format. Data obtained from numerous measurements on the above described experimental facility were used for the model validation. Then we can evaluate results and make improvements of the model.
