Original Abstract

Main part of heat gains in passive houses are due to direct solar radiation while the remaining 30 percent are generated by electrical devices and by occupants themselves. In a particular room the power can rise up to thousands of watts, compared to mere 100 watts of heat losses. Do we know how to utilize such a high power? The timing of the heat gains is usually rather unpredictable and does not correlate with the heat losses. In the course of winter, heat losses and internal gains are typically very well-balanced; however, it is impossible to make use of the gains from direct solar radiation at the time. In order to maximize utilization of the heat gains, energy can be accumulated in building materials or in Phase Change Material (PCM). In calculations, a utilization coefficient of solar gains efficiency of 0.9 is used; nevertheless, the efficiency in a real passive house is usually lower.
