Original Abstract

Flue gas generated by thermal treatment of municipal solid waste (MSW) contains several harmful and potentially hazardous compounds. Various mechanical and chemical methods are used for removing these compounds up to the level required by valid legislation. The most wide-spread and reliable method in case of acid gasses (like SO2, HCl, HF) is the wet scrubbing. This technology takes advantages of absorption processes for off-gas cleaning. In industrial applications it usually consists of two stages equipment - the first is based on a Venturi scrubber and the second stage on a packed column. The alkali solution of NaOH with various values of pH is commonly used as an absorption agent. As NaOH reacts with SO2 the reactive absorption occurs in absorption devices. A unit for wet scrubbing which is characterized by considerably novel design and arrangement, was developed and built. This unit represents 1st stage of flue gas cleaning process used for industrial conditions: Venturi scrubber. Apart from this conventional device a new absorption device was developed, called O_element. This unit achieves the comparable cleaning efficiency with Venturi scrubber and has slightly lower pressure drop. The results of experiments carried out on this unit are presented in this contribution. The aim of experiments was to find out how the operating parameters affect the efficiency of SO2 removed from flue gas. There are several parameters which influence the amount of acid gasses captured by wet scrubbing. One of the most important operating parameters is pH of absorption agent. It is indicated that rather big response of efficiency is related to small change in this parameter. Another parameter with influence on absorption process is the flow rate of alkali liquid because of its relation to the size of interface area.
