Original Abstract

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 NPs) display an array of effects from negative, to neutral and positive when applied on plants. Importantly, when the right concentrations are selected, these nanoparticles have positive effects on seed germination, the vigor of young and mature plants and can also increase crop yield and nutritional value. They stimulate the production of certain enzymes and proteins, enhance chlorophyll content and photosynthesis, promote nutrient uptake, and increase stress tolerance. Yet, the underlying mechanism of these beneficial effects is still not fully understood. This chapter describes the influence of TiO 2 NPs nanoparticles' properties, including size, shape, crystal structure, and nanoparticle surface coating, etc. on plants. Foliar uptake, soil uptake, and seed coating are the three main entry pathways that plants are exposed to and interact with these nanoparticles. The effect of different concentrations of nanoparticles is thoroughly examined. Pathways and length of exposure affecting concentrations that enhance plant growth have been discussed. There are many benefits of using TiO 2 NPs alone and in complex formulations on plant growth and yield and their summary is provided. Most of the knowledge on the influence of TiO 2 NPs comes from short-term high-concentration experiments. In the future, more long-term experiments in more real, environmentally relevant conditions are needed to evaluate plant growth, nutritional value, multigenerational influence, and the best time and conditions of application. The knowledge about the benign use of TiO 2 NPs in agriculture is in its early stages and a great deal of work needs to be undertaken to assure environmental safety and agricultural applications.
