Original Abstract

Exact identification of cell death type is important for instance in diagnostics, dose-response, and toxicological studies. Predominant types of cell death are usually detected by flow-cytometry (FCM), where the absence of the analysis of cellular morphology leads to the misclassification of cell death type due to underestimated oncosis. The definition of oncosis is important because of its potential reversibility. Therefore, FCM analysis of cell death using the annexin V/propidium iodide assay was compared with quantitative phase imaging (QPI) coupled with fluorescence detection.
