Original Abstract

A distributed fiber-optic sensor system designed for detection and localization of acoustic vibrations is presented in this paper. In common optical telecommunication networks the scattering phenomena are suppressed rather than used. In the area of distributed fiber-optic sensors it is possible to use many of these linear and non-linear phenomena for sensing purposes, especially the Rayleigh, the Raman and the Brillouin scatterings. In our laboratory we have proposed a sensing system based on the phase-sensitive OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometry) using extremely narrow line-width laser. It is possible to use this system for detection and localization of acoustic vibrations, which can be caused by various external factors like walking people, moving cars, trains, and other objects producing mechanical vibrations that are sensed by an optical fiber. This system could be used for monitoring of long perimeters, national borders, pipelines, seismically active areas etc.
