Original Abstract

Continuous casting (CC) of steel is the leading technology providing almost one hundred percent of world steel production. The molten steel is cooled down into an intermediate shape called slabs, blooms and billets. The solidifying slab is subjected to variable thermal and stress conditions which can cause many serious defects in final structure such as surface or internal cracks. This paper presents an original regulation algorithm used to obtain time-dependent casting parameters for temperature stabilization of the CC process. The essential part of the algorithm is the 3D numerical model of temperature field which simulates heat and mass transfer, solidification of the strand, grow of the solid shell etc. The regulation part of the algorithm is based on the fuzzy logic approach which combines close-loop and open-loop control. The whole regulation concept is very general and can be applied to arbitrary grade of steel and caster geometry.
