Original Abstract

The pure nitrogen DC discharge in flowing regime was used for the presented measurements. The experiments were carried out at the constant applied energy. The total gas pressure was varied in range of 500-3000 Pa at nitrogen flow in the range of 120-680 sccm that ensured the constant flow velocity for all gas pressures. Mercury vapor was introduced into the system by the titration tube at different post-discharge times. The mercury line at 254 nm was excited by the resonance energy transfer reaction during collisions of mercury atoms with nitrogen ground state metastables excited to vibrational level 19. Thus this technique allows an indirect qualitative study of highly excited nitrogen ground state metastables that are not determinable by any other contemporary diagnostics.
