Original Abstract

This paper briefly summarizes research activities and studies concerning internal erosion carried out in Eastern European countries. It is mainly focused on work produced in former Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union since the nineteen-twenties. The studies discussed below comprise the definition of seepage conditions, classification of internal erosion types, and geometric and hydraulic criteria for filtration stability. It mentions a number of empirical formulae and criteria based on laboratory and field tests which have been published by V.S. Istomina, G.H. Pravedny, J. Cistin, V. Halek and many others.
